Firefighters from the Generalitat are working on a hay bale fire in Vilamacolum, in Girona province, this morning, 4 June 2026. The incident was reported around 8am.
On arrival, emergency services found that the farmer had already set up a safety perimeter. He had also moved several bales away from the flames to stop the fire spreading further, according to officials.
Firefighters said the blaze is not expected to affect more hay bales beyond those already burning. Between 100 and 150 bales are currently involved in the fire.
As is standard practice in incidents of this type, crews will allow the affected bales to burn in a controlled way until they are fully consumed. Firefighters will stay at the scene and monitor the perimeter closely.
This kind of agricultural fire can be harder to manage during dry periods, when hay and other stored materials can catch fire more easily. For more local updates, see our news coverage.
Fire crews are expected to remain on site throughout the day to deal with any flare-ups and to make sure the fire stays contained. The full extent of the damage will be clear once the blaze has fully burned out.
