In Paüls, Baix Ebre, four forestry companies are removing trees damaged in last summer’s wildfire, under a coordinated recovery model led with public bodies.

The work is free for landowners and is meant to speed up the extraction of burnt wood and the management of affected plots. For farmers and other owners in the area, the immediate step is to follow the arrangements set out by the local recovery teams and the Department of Agriculture, according to the Generalitat.

What the new model does

According to the Generalitat de Catalunya, Department of Agriculture, the model brings administrations in as intermediaries so forestry firms can work across many small plots. Twelve lots have been created to make the operation viable for the companies, while keeping the service free for landowners.

Jordi Galofré, an engineer with Gil Forestal, said the coordination was needed because the land is highly fragmented in the Ebro area and it can be difficult to identify and contact all titleholders. That is why the scheme is being organised plot by plot rather than as a single large clearance.

Who is affected in Baix Ebre

The main beneficiaries are landowners and farmers in Paüls and nearby wildfire-affected plots in Baix Ebre. The article’s source material says the model may also help future wildfire recovery work in Catalonia, especially in places with similar ownership patterns, but that is an expected outcome rather than a confirmed wider rollout.
