An industrial fire in Òrrius, in Maresme, caused a paraffin spill into a nearby stream on Thursday afternoon, with Civil Protection issuing a mobile phone alert for residents to stay indoors.
The fire started at about 5pm in an industrial unit in the Pla de l'Estany industrial estate, according to initial reports. Flames spread quickly and a large smoke plume was seen from several points across the region.
Civil Protection activated its emergency plan as a precaution and told people in nearby municipalities, including Argentona and La Roca del Vallès, to remain inside and keep doors and windows closed. The measure was taken to reduce the risk of inhaling toxic smoke.
The paraffin spill is a concern for emergency teams because it could contaminate the waterway and affect the local ecosystem. Firefighters were working to extinguish the flames and bring the situation under control.
The cause of the fire was not yet known, and there was no information on whether anyone was injured. For ongoing local updates, see our news coverage.
