Nissan has submitted a collective dismissal proposal, known as an ERE, affecting three of its centres in Catalonia. The proposal impacts the spare parts centre in El Prat de Llobregat, the technical centre in Barcelona's Zona Franca, and the flexible areas centre, also in El Prat.
The announcement on Monday follows an indefinite strike proposal by the trade union section at the El Prat spare parts centre, which employs 122 people. Nissan initiated dialogue with the union, leading to a joint meeting on Monday where the company presented its proposal to the Ministry of Labour and Business, according to Nissan sources.
These sources confirmed that a negotiation table will now be established to define how the ERE will be implemented with worker representatives. They clarified that while the proposal covers all three centres, it does not mean 100% of the staff at each location will be dismissed.
Union seeks similar conditions to previous closures
Juan Carlos Yepes, general secretary of the UGT trade union section at Nissan Spare Parts in El Prat, told Europa Press that the seven-day period to form the negotiation table begins on 29 April. He added that the strike remains in place but will not be executed until the real impact of the ERE is known.
Yepes explained that, without knowing the exact scope of the proposal or its effect on each centre, the spare parts centre is expected to be the most affected. Unions aim to secure similar measures to those implemented during Nissan's previous closures in Catalonia between 2020 and 2021, which affected 2,500 workers.
Many employees now at the centres impacted by the new proposal were previously employed at the sites closed in 2020-2021. Yepes stated, "These people will surely want the same conditions their colleagues left with."
Moving forward, the negotiation table will work to determine the specific terms of the collective dismissal, including the number of affected employees and the compensation packages.
