Japanese medical multinational Nipro will invest approximately €25 million in a new production plant in Lleida, western Catalonia. The company plans for the facility, located in the Torre Solé industrial park, to start operations in 2028 and become one of its primary European centres for producing dialysis liquid.
Nipro, a global leader in medical devices, dialysis equipment, and pharmaceuticals, has acquired land on the outskirts of Lleida, near the Ll-11 road and the southern bypass. Company sources told reporters that this location was chosen for its "excellent logistical connectivity, the availability of talent, and the capacity to support Nipro's long-term operational and growth ambitions in the region."
This move involves relocating and expanding Nipro's current plant in Mollerussa, which also manufactures dialysis liquid. The company described the project as a "relocation and expansion of current operations" to the capital of Pla d'Urgell.
Boosting Production Capacity
While Nipro did not specify the exact number of new jobs, it stated that the project is expected to generate "new employment opportunities over time as operations continue to grow." The company's website currently lists over 40 employees at the Mollerussa site. Nipro's priority is to "preserve and strengthen" its activities in the area, with the new, more modern production centre supporting "sustainable long-term development."
The new plant will continue to produce acid concentrates for haemodialysis and bicarbonate cartridges, essential products for patients with severe kidney failure. The updated facilities will improve operational efficiency, technology, and capacity, allowing Nipro to meet increasing market demand. The company explained that while the Mollerussa factory has served it well, "its surface area and infrastructure limit future expansion possibilities."
Nipro emphasised that the new Lleida plant will be one of its main European production centres for haemodialysis concentrates and bicarbonate cartridges. This initiative also reaffirms the company's commitment to maintaining industrial activity in Catalonia.
Project Planning and Future Outlook
The project is currently in the planning and permit application phase. The expectation is for the plant to be operational within two years, by 2028. This operation has been in development for some time and was managed by the Invest in Lleida and Talent Office, established by Lleida City Council to attract investment. The establishment of Nipro in Torre Solé will mean that this privately promoted industrial park is now almost complete.
