Investigation launched after classroom incident

The Mossos d'Esquadra have opened an investigation into a complaint filed by a family from Sant Vicenç de Castellet, alleging discrimination against a transgender minor at the local IES Castellet secondary school. The regional police confirmed to ElNacional.cat that they accepted the report on the evening of 7 October and are carrying out procedures to clarify the events. According to the family's account, reported by Regió7 and confirmed by ElNacional.cat, the student had communicated their gender transition at the end of 2025, and the school environment remained respectful and inclusive until September 2026. The situation changed, they say, when a specific teacher responded to the student misnaming them by drawing a comparison to using the minor's former name, the one assigned at birth, instead of their current chosen name.

Family demands apology, protest held at school

The family stated that the comment caused significant emotional distress and risked creating a hostile environment for the student. They formally requested that the teacher apologise publicly in front of the class, but the teacher refused, according to the complaint and school management's knowledge. Even after mediation attempts by two psychologists, the teacher reportedly declined to offer a private apology, describing the request as "humiliating". The family interprets this refusal as deliberate discrimination linked to the student's gender identity.

The family has also taken their concerns beyond the police complaint. They have engaged administrative support channels, including the local SAI LGBTI+ service and Infància Respon, and held a protest outside the school with a banner to draw attention to the case. Information about the SAI LGBTI+ support service in Manresa and Bages is available via the SAI LGTBI Bages brochure.

The Mossos are treating the case as recent and are carrying out the appropriate procedures.

Police sources emphasised that the investigation is at an early stage. The Generalitat's anti-discrimination framework, including the Protocol for Transgender People in Educational Settings, provides guidance for such cases, and the Mossos d'Esquadra's hate crime unit handles reports of discriminatory conduct.
