The Mossos d'Esquadra in Terres de l'Ebre commemorated the Day of the Squads on 7 May with an institutional ceremony at the Firal Pavilion in La Ràpita. The event recognised the police force's commitment, professional careers, and constant dedication, while also thanking all professionals who work daily to ensure safety in the Terres de l'Ebre region.

Núria Parlon, the Minister of Interior and Public Security, presided over the ceremony. She was joined by Joan Castor Gonell Agramunt, the delegate of the Generalitat government in Terres de l'Ebre, and Javier Reverté Balada, the mayor of La Ràpita. Other dignitaries included Intendent Joan Carles de la Monja, head of the Terres de l'Ebre Police Region, and Commissioner David Boneta, head of the Superior Territorial Police Station.

During the commemoration, 97 internal and four external commendations were awarded, alongside six decorations. These included two for meritorious actions, one for professional career, and three external honours. Institutional recognitions also saw the presentation of seven plaques, a bronze figure, four commemorative plaques, and eight acknowledgements. The ceremony concluded with a tribute to the families of two deceased Mossos officers.

Acts of Bravery Recognised

Among the distinguished actions was that of an officer from the Tortosa police station, who saved the life of a truck driver on 11 November 2025. The incident occurred on the AP-7 motorway in L'Aldea, where the truck had crashed. The officer and their partner were the first police unit to arrive at the scene. After securing the area, they found the driver trapped in the cabin with two broken legs, as fire rapidly approached the vehicle.

Facing imminent danger, the officer acted quickly and bravely, managing to extract the victim before the flames reached the truck. This swift action prevented a potentially fatal outcome, according to officials.

Another meritorious action recognised this year involved a corporal and an officer who rescued a family from carbon monoxide poisoning in Amposta on 29 April 2025. The incident began with a 112 call reporting that several family members felt dizzy inside their home. Upon arrival, officers found a semi-conscious man, who was evacuated by medical services.

The corporal then re-entered the home to rescue a two-year-old child, bringing her to safety. Firefighters later arrived to complete the safe rescue of the mother. Both adults were taken to hospital in a serious condition, while the child was unharmed.

Local Knowledge and Public Trust

In his speech, Intendent Joan Carles de la Monja praised the work of the Mossos d'Esquadra in Terres de l'Ebre. He highlighted their rigour, commitment, and deep knowledge of the territory and its people. He remarked that these professionals are rooted in the region, understanding its social reality and particularities, which helps them offer a more personal, humane, and effective service to citizens.

The intendent also noted positive security data for Terres de l'Ebre, showing a reduction in crime. However, he cautioned that “citizens do not live by percentages, but by what they perceive on the street and what they experience in their daily lives.” He stressed the need for continued intense work against crime to strengthen public trust and maintain good results from police efforts.
