Minister Brings New Training Scheme to Local Firms

On Thursday morning, Núria Montserrat, Catalonia’s Minister for Research and Universities, met with Sant Feliu mayor Lourdes Borrell and municipal officials at the town hall to advance a new initiative bringing university-level microcredentials to the city’s workforce. The programme, coordinated by the Generalitat de Catalunya, offers short, flexible courses, ranging from 25 to 375 hours, with official academic recognition of up to 15 ECTS credits. It is designed to meet the real training needs of working adults in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and technology. Montserrat stressed the importance of tailoring the scheme to local economic demands: "We know Sant Feliu’s commitment to delivering knowledge directly to businesses. Today’s meeting marks the first step in fully implementing this programme and promoting continuous learning here."

Tied to Broader Innovation District Plan

Mayor Borrell linked the microcredentials initiative to the city’s wider economic transformation through the upcoming Districte d'Innovació Empresarial. This project aims to regenerate industrial areas like El Pla, Les Grases, and Matacàs, integrating innovation, urban quality, and citizen wellbeing. The district will connect with research nodes and boost high-value sectors including pharmaceuticals, leveraging the presence of Almirall, and digital design. The goal is to attract and retain skilled workers while upgrading existing industry. Businesses in these sectors will be encouraged to enrol employees in microcredential courses, allowing them to gain certified skills without leaving employment.

“We’re committed to connecting with universities and the ministry so that companies can keep their workers trained and competitive,”

said Borrell. The microcredentials are delivered in collaboration with Catalan universities and are part of the Generalitat’s broader Microcreds.cat plan, launched to support lifelong learning and workforce adaptability.

Next Steps for Employers

Local firms interested in the programme can explore course offerings and eligibility through the official Microcreds.cat portal. The Ajuntament will coordinate outreach to ensure uptake across the business community.
