Girona, Catalonia, Míchel Sánchez has left his role as Girona FC manager after five seasons, following the club’s recent relegation to the second division. The announcement was made on 28 May 2026.
In a statement, the club thanked the 50-year-old Madrid-born coach for his dedication, commitment and professionalism. Girona also said he had treated members, fans and staff with friendliness and respect.
Sánchez joined Girona in the summer of 2021. In his first season, he guided the team to promotion to the first division. Over five years at Montilivi, he oversaw 221 official matches.
His most successful season came in 2023-24, when Girona finished third in the league and qualified for the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. Sánchez also won praise from supporters for learning Catalan and using it in many of his public appearances.
