Girona, Girona FC has confirmed that manager Míchel Sánchez will not continue with the club after relegation to the Segunda División. The announcement, made on Tuesday afternoon, means the Madrid-born coach will not lead the team next season.

The club said the decision comes five days after relegation was confirmed. It is the first major change since the drop, which left the squad stunned for several days.

Míchel’s departure ends a five-season spell in charge. During that time, Girona won promotion to La Liga, finished third in the top flight and qualified for the Champions League, before returning to Spain’s second tier.

All members of his technical staff will also leave Girona FC. The club named Salva Fúnez, Juan Carlos Balaguer and David Porcel in its statement.

Girona now has to appoint a new coaching team ahead of next season in the Segunda División. For more Catalonia-wide sports coverage, see our news page.
