Attack on line 4 metro near Joanic station
A man was injured in an unprovoked attack on board a Barcelona metro train on Monday, 24 August, at around 11am. The incident occurred on line 4, known as the yellow line, while the train was approaching Joanic station in the Gràcia district. According to emergency services, multiple witnesses called the 112 emergency number to report a stabbing inside the carriage. The victim, a man whose identity has not been released, suffered cuts to his neck and back from a small sharp object. Police sources confirmed to ElCaso.com that a knife or folding blade was ruled out, though the exact item used has not been identified.
Victim treated on site, suspect apprehended
Paramedics from the Catalan Health Emergency Service (SEM) provided immediate first aid to the victim on the platform at Joanic station before transferring him to a nearby hospital. His injuries, while serious, are not considered life-threatening. Security teams from the metro and Mossos d’Esquadra, the regional police, launched a search for the suspect based on descriptions from passengers and the victim. Officers located the suspect still at Joanic station shortly after the incident.
The suspect attempted to flee and resisted arrest, but was detained at the scene.
He faces charges of assault and disobedience. Investigators confirmed the two men did not know each other. The suspect is believed to have been under the influence of drugs at the time and may have a mental health condition linked to substance dependence, according to reports from Crónica Global.
The incident has renewed public concern about safety on Barcelona’s public transport network. No official statement has been issued by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) or the Generalitat regarding changes to security measures following the attack.
