Mossos d’Esquadra are investigating the death of a man whose body was found on Far beach in Vilanova i la Geltrú, in the Barcelona area, on Friday morning. The Criminal Investigation Division, known as the DIC, is leading the case, according to police sources who confirmed the news to ACN.
Police received an alert at around 8am after residents found the clothed body on the sand. It was about 20 metres from the water, near the breakwater that separates Far beach from the port, in the designated dog beach area.
Initial observations suggest the body did not have stab or gunshot wounds, ACN reported. The exact circumstances of the death are still being investigated. Several Mossos units, including scientific police and officers from the local police, attended the scene.
The investigation has been declared secret. The body was removed shortly after 12.15pm, and the last scientific police units left about an hour later. Access to the dog beach area was closed from the time police arrived until after 12.30pm.
Despite the police activity, bathers continued to use the rest of Far beach as normal. Sunny weather and high temperatures brought many people to the beach, most of whom were unaware of the investigation. Dogs were allowed outside the restricted area on Friday because of the circumstances.
Further details are expected as the secret investigation continues. For more Catalonia-wide local news, see our news coverage.
