The Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating the death of a man in his 50s who was found dead in an irrigation channel of the Canal de la Dreta d’Ebre near Amposta on Monday, 7 September 2026.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before 11:30 am, following a report from a witness who spotted the body in the water close to the TV-3403 road. Officers from the regional police force responded immediately and confirmed there was no chance of saving the man’s life.
The body has been transferred to the forensic institute for autopsy, which is expected to determine the exact cause of death. According to police sources cited by ACN, initial findings do not point to natural causes, though authorities stress this does not necessarily indicate a criminal act.
Investigation Under Way
Investigators are examining all possibilities, including accident, suicide or homicide. The surrounding area near the TV-3403 has been inspected for evidence, and officers are reviewing missing persons reports in the region to establish the man’s identity.
The Mossos have not ruled out non-natural circumstances, but all lines of inquiry remain open pending forensic results.
No disappearances had been reported in Amposta prior to the discovery, municipal sources told ACN. The case remains active as officials await the outcome of the post-mortem examination.
