Police in Catalonia are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man during a violent confrontation in the coastal town of La Ràpita, in the Montsià region, in the early hours of Sunday 23 August.
According to ReusDigital.cat, which reported the incident based on official sources, the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police, received a call at 3:30am reporting a fight between groups that had resulted in a stabbing. Officers and emergency medical teams from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) responded immediately.
Despite resuscitation efforts by paramedics using three ambulances, the victim, described in initial reports as a Maghrebi man, died at the scene. The attack reportedly occurred after a confrontation between a group of South Americans and the victim, though the exact motive remains under investigation.
Police probe possible drug debt motive
The Divisió d'Investigació Criminal (DIC) of the Terres de l'Ebre has taken charge of the investigation. While no official confirmation has been made about arrests, the case is now under court-ordered secrecy, and the Mossos have declined to release further details.
According to initial findings, one of the main hypotheses is that the attack may have stemmed from a drugs-related debt.
This line of inquiry is based on early investigative work, though authorities have not ruled out that the attacker may not have intended to kill, but that the knife wound proved fatal by chance.
