A 25-year-old man has been criminally charged by the Mossos d'Esquadra after causing a reckless driving accident on the C-14 road in Pira, Conca de Barberà, on Friday, 17 April. He fled the scene, leaving a car in flames, but later contacted the police himself.

The incident occurred when the driver, whose nationality has not been disclosed, attempted to overtake two vehicles simultaneously on a section of the C-14 with only one lane per direction. After passing the first car, another vehicle correctly approached in the opposing lane, directly in the path of the dangerous manoeuvre. To avoid a head-on collision, the 25-year-old swerved sharply back into his original lane, resulting in a violent lateral impact with the second car he was attempting to overtake.

The force of the collision caused the second vehicle to leave the road, roll twice, and subsequently catch fire. Fortunately, the driver of the damaged car managed to exit the vehicle unaided. The victim sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital by the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), according to officials. This dangerous incident highlights the severe risks associated with reckless overtaking on single-carriageway roads.

Driver Flees and Contacts Police

Following the crash, the young driver immediately left the scene. However, minutes later, while Mossos d'Esquadra officers were attending to the victim and gathering information at the accident site on the C-14, the fleeing driver called the Mossos d'Esquadra police station in Tàrrega. Catalan police instructed the individual to report to the Montblanc police station, where officers identified him.

After examining the man's vehicle and confirming that the damage was consistent with the collision, the Mossos d'Esquadra proceeded to criminally charge him. He faces allegations of reckless driving, serious negligent injury, and abandoning the scene of an accident. These charges underscore the gravity of his actions, both in causing the collision and in his initial attempt to evade responsibility.

The 25-year-old will now face legal proceedings related to these serious offences. The case serves as a reminder of the legal consequences for drivers who engage in dangerous manoeuvres and fail to remain at the scene of an accident, particularly when injuries and significant damage occur. Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
