Girona, Catalonia, longevity expert Dan Buettner has challenged popular myths about living longer, saying social relationships, daily activity and good nutrition matter more than so-called miracle products. Buettner, known for his research into Blue Zones around the world, shared his findings on 14 June 2026.
Interest in living longer and healthier lives has increased attention on supplements, fad diets and quick fixes. Buettner argues that the real factors behind longevity are much simpler, based on years of studying places with high numbers of centenarians. He says the habits that matter most have less to do with special products and more to do with everyday life.
According to Buettner, people who live longer often keep active social lives. Sharing meals with family, regular conversations with friends, taking part in community activities and feeling part of a group are common themes in places with the highest life expectancy. He says these connections can reduce stress, support emotional well-being and strengthen a sense of belonging.
Buettner also stresses diet and movement. In Blue Zones, diets are mainly plant-based, with legumes, fruit, vegetables and minimally processed foods. This is paired with steady, everyday activity, not necessarily intense exercise. Many long-lived people stay active through walking, gardening, household chores and other routine movement.
He says this approach is more useful over time than relying on supplements or formulas that promise to extend life. His view is that longevity is shaped by quality of life, including strong personal ties, regular movement, balanced eating and reasons to enjoy daily routines.
People who reach 100 years old do not usually share a magic pill. According to Buettner, they share a way of life built on community, moderation and healthy habits over many years. For more Catalonia-wide health coverage, see our news page.
