Lleida Provincial Council is backing the renovation of more than 50 homes in rural municipalities across the province, in a move aimed at tackling depopulation. The plan comes through a new call for applications under the Demographic Challenge housing subsidy programme, according to officials on 25 May 2026.
Agustí Jiménez, first vice-president of the council, said proposals for the new €3.5 million funding round are being assessed. He said the subsidies are expected to allow the renovation of more than 50 properties.
The council said this follows a previous funding round in which 44 homes in 33 municipalities were rehabilitated. It has already received 21 applications for these homes, underlining the difficulty of finding housing in rural areas.
Housing is one part of the council’s wider work on rural development. Its news coverage also includes the SEDERURAL project, the ‘Project for the Sensitisation, Development and Rebalancing of Rural Areas of the Province of Lleida’.
SEDERURAL includes three main lines of action, Ruralforma-T, a sensitisation programme for rural schools, Empodera-T, a training project for women in rural areas, and Serveis en Ruta, which aims to bring basic services to small municipalities that do not currently have them. The council says the service is designed to improve quality of life and make these villages more attractive to new residents.
The proposal links professionals, such as hairdressers or podiatrists, with clients in small towns who need their services. More details on the subsidy programme should be published by the council as the applications are reviewed.
