Xavier Palau, the leader of the People's Party (PP) in Lleida and head of the opposition at the Paeria de Lleida, has urged Mayor Fèlix Larrosa to show "bravery" and implement an effective ban on the burka. Palau criticised the local government's proposed municipal ordinance, stating it only regulates, rather than prohibits, the garment.
Palau told reporters that the council is aware of the legal limitations of its current proposal. "If they really want to ban it, they should do so, and they will have my support," he said. The ordinance, set for debate in the Paeria plenary session in June, aims to prohibit face-covering garments, but includes exceptions for religious reasons or in places of worship.
The PP leader highlighted that a total ban in public spaces would require a national organic law. He described the municipal ordinance as an "insufficient initiative" without this broader legislative step. Palau called on Mayor Larrosa to press the central government for specific legislation or, alternatively, to include a full prohibition in the local ordinance, even if it risks judicial challenge.
Palau's Vision for Lleida
Palau, who has led the opposition since 2023, is already developing his platform for the 2027 municipal elections. His vision centres on defending "common sense, order, and Lleida identity." He aims to prevent social segregation in neighbourhoods and avoid the creation of "parallel societies," while promoting integration policies for immigrant populations.
He also advocates for stricter security measures, such as withdrawing municipal aid from individuals who repeatedly engage in uncivil behaviour. Palau expressed a positive outlook on the upcoming Catalan PP congress, which currently has no set date, and noted the party's strong position in Catalonia.
Locally, Palau emphasised projects like the transformation of Turó de Gardeny, intending to connect it with the city centre and increase public use. "We must contribute to key city projects and move beyond left-wing policies," he concluded. The debate on the burka ordinance and Palau's broader proposals will shape political discourse in Lleida in the coming months.
