CUP spokeswoman Su Moreno on Monday criticised ERC and the Comuns for supporting governments pursuing an expansion of Barcelona Airport while publicly opposing the project. She argued that the debate matters to Barcelona residents and Rodalies commuters because public investment should address a safe, reliable rail service before increasing the airport's passenger capacity.
Speaking at the party's headquarters, Moreno said political parties could not separate themselves from responsibility for the policies of the governments they support.
“You cannot shift responsibility elsewhere.”
Moreno said the Comuns could not ask the European Union to stop the airport plan while remaining in Spain's Council of Ministers, the cabinet of the national government. “If we want to stop the PSC's plans, we have to stand up to the PSC,” she said, referring to the Socialists' Party of Catalonia.
Rail reliability before airport capacity
Moreno welcomed Sunday's demonstration in Barcelona against the proposed expansion. She said it made no sense to increase airport capacity while Rodalies, Catalonia's regional and commuter rail network, was not guaranteed to provide a safe and reliable public service.
She said no further money should be allocated to the expansion while problems on the Rodalies network persist, arguing that public spending priorities did not match residents' needs.
CUP's Barcelona election plans
Moreno also addressed the CUP's planned Barcelona municipal-election candidacy, which will be led by MP Laure Vega. She said the list was being built from the grassroots, and rejected what she described as empty proposals from other parties.
She cited Comuns candidate Gerardo Pisarello's proposal for a broad left-wing alliance, saying majorities should instead be built around a project with shared aims. Moreno said the CUP's candidacy intended to remove Mayor Jaume Collboni from office, while working with other parties where popular movements and the CUP could influence common objectives.
