Les Borges Blanques, in the Garrigues region of Lleida, has started a new door-to-door waste collection system for 3,300 homes, according to the local council. The town says it is the last municipality in Les Garrigues to adopt this method.
Residents were asked to leave the correct bins outside their homes between 8pm and 10pm before collection lorries passed. On the first day, organic waste and plastic were collected.
The council has set a weekly collection schedule. Organic waste will be collected again tomorrow, along with paper and cardboard. On Wednesdays, general waste, nappies, sanitary towels and animal excrement will be collected.
To support the change, the council provided information in the weeks before launch on how to separate waste correctly and supplied specific bins for different types of rubbish. An emergency waste area has also been set up at the Centre d'Entitats.
The council says the system is intended to increase recycling and reduce landfill waste across the municipality. Similar schemes in other towns in Les Garrigues have reported better waste separation rates.
