In Catalonia, a Civil Guard report has said the Leire Díez plot was aimed at protecting the PSOE, the Spanish government and its president, Pedro Sánchez. The conclusion comes from the Civil Guard’s Central Operative Unit, known as the UCO, after analysing evidence gathered in the case.

The UCO said it had identified “the existence of a group of people who, during a specific period, at least between 2024 and 2025, would have carried out a series of supposedly criminal actions”. That assessment is based on the material collected during the investigation.

The report says those alleged actions were intended to safeguard the interests of the Socialist Workers’ Party, the current Spanish government and its leader. It does not set out a final judicial ruling, but presents the UCO’s view of the evidence so far.

The case remains under investigation, with authorities still examining the full scope of the alleged plot and what it could mean for political integrity in Spain. Readers following wider political coverage can also see our news page for related reporting.
