La Bisbal d'Empordà council in Girona will take direct control of its waste collection service, with the aim of improving efficiency and dealing with current problems. The local government announced the move on 28 May 2026 as part of a three-phase plan to fix incidents and renew the container system.

The first phase will focus on clearing outstanding issues, including cleaning containers and repairing those in poor condition. The council says this is intended to address the most visible problems affecting residents as quickly as possible.

The second phase will update the container system with new models that are described as more efficient and sustainable. The third phase will introduce a new management system designed to improve monitoring of the service and make it more responsive to citizen needs.

Mayor Lídia Vinart said the plan is important for maintaining a quality service and improving the town's image. She said the council is committed to the continuous improvement of public services, and that waste collection is a basic part of neighbours' quality of life.

Work on the containers is expected to start by the end of the year, with the new management system due to be fully operational by early 2027. The total cost of the plan is estimated at €300,000, funded through council money and grants from the Girona Provincial Council.
