Mossos d'Esquadra officers are investigating the discovery of twelve AK-74 assault rifles, commonly known as Kalashnikovs, inside a luxury vehicle located in the early hours of today on the AP-7 motorway, near Borrassà in Alt Empordà. The occupants of the car reportedly fled during a routine police check, escaping in a second vehicle.
The incident occurred around 1:40am at a motorway service area close to Figueres. Officers noticed a man inside a French-registered Porsche Cayenne parked in the area. Upon seeing the police, the man exited the vehicle and ran. Mossos then observed him getting into another car, driven by a second man who was also at the service area, and both fled south.
Investigation Underway
When officers inspected the Porsche, which was open and without keys, they found documentation that may belong to one of the fugitives, a man in his thirties. A search of the boot revealed two bags containing a dozen AK-74 assault rifles. The Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of Girona has taken over the case and is now investigating the identities of the fugitives, as well as the origin and intended destination of the weapons. Forensic police are also analysing whether the rifles are operational and if they have been used in previous criminal activities.
To help with fingerprinting and further evidence collection, the vehicle and the confiscated weapons have been moved to the Basic Police Area facilities in Figueres.
Rising Weapon Concerns
This discovery follows a recent warning from Mossos Commissioner Sílvia Catà. During the Girona police region's 'Dia de les Esquadres' event, she highlighted an increase in the presence of long-barrelled weapons in operations linked to marijuana plantations and organised crime networks. The ongoing investigation aims to connect these findings with broader criminal activities in the region.
