In Barcelona, Junts MPs Míriam Nogueras and Eduard Pujol asked Pope Leo XIV to speak Catalan during his two-day visit to Catalonia, according to VilaWeb.

The request was made during a reception at the Spanish lower house. Nogueras, who is a Junts MP in the Spanish Congress, spoke to the Pope in English and Italian.

She told him: “Your Holiness, like Gaudí, I am Catalan. Speaking the language of the land that welcomes you is a beautiful act of love and respect. I hope you enjoy your visit to Catalonia, my nation.”

VilaWeb reported that Pope Leo XIV nodded several times in response. Eduard Pujol, a Junts senator, made a similar appeal, saying: “Your Holiness, like Antoni Gaudí and Pau Casals, I am Catalan. Speaking the language of the land that welcomes you is a beautiful act of love and respect.”

The exchange comes as Pope Leo XIV prepares for his visit to Catalonia. Junts representatives said the request was meant to encourage him to recognise the region’s linguistic identity during public appearances. For more Catalonia political coverage, see our news page.
