Barcelona, Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas has secured the endorsements needed to take part in Junts' primary to choose its mayoral candidate for the 2027 municipal elections.

The lawyer and former Junts MP in both the Spanish Congress and the Catalan Parliament said on X, formerly Twitter, that the party had given him the backing required to enter the contest. He added that all four aspirants should be able to present their ideas, projects and vision.

Alonso-Cuevillas was the last of four people to announce a bid. He joins Jordi Martí Galbis and Pilar Calvo, who have already secured the support of 20% of the party's membership. Junts is still waiting to confirm whether Glòria Freixa, a Catalan Parliament MP and First Secretary of the Mesa, also meets the threshold to stand.

When he presented his candidacy last Thursday evening, Alonso-Cuevillas told TOT Barcelona that the primaries should be used to challenge Jaume Collboni for the Barcelona mayoralty, not as a pre-congress to decide which faction gains more influence inside Junts. He said he does not align with any internal faction.

He also said, “For me, Junts is the soul of a movement with the body of a party, and I represent the soul of the movement.” Under the party rules, the primary process must finish on 21 June, with members voting online on 20 and 21 June. The result will be announced at 8pm on 21 June.

The campaign period will last seven days. During that time, party officials will remain neutral. Junts will send one email to members and supporters in Barcelona, with information each candidate wants to share. For more Catalonia politics coverage, see our news page.
