La Segona República i el Municipalisme (1931–1939), an exhibition examining the Second Spanish Republic through the work of local councils, is open at the Biblioteca Central d'Igualada until 26 September.

For Igualada residents, the display brings together local records and audiovisual material that place national political and social change alongside events in their own city, including images of the town hall and the visit of Spanish Republic president Manuel Azaña.

The Biblioteca Central d'Igualada, Ajuntament d'Igualada, the town council, and the Diputació de Barcelona, Barcelona Provincial Council, organised the exhibition with the Arxiu Comarcal de l'Anoia, the county archive, and Anoia Històrica.

Local records added to travelling exhibition

The Diputació de Barcelona's Democratic Memory programme said the travelling exhibition has been expanded in Igualada with material specifically connected to the city. Its staff visited the display on 18 August.

The wider exhibition presents political, social, educational and cultural changes during the Republic, from 1931 to 1939, and the challenges faced by the public during that period. In Igualada, the additional material focuses on the role of the local council in those changes.

Photographs, documents and wartime film

Visitors can see historical photographs, documents and audiovisual material, including:

  • a photograph of Igualada Town Hall flying the republican flag;
  • images of children's holiday camps organised by the council and the Palestra organisation;
  • documents relating to Manuel Azaña's visit to Igualada; and
  • the complete excerpt of Il Legionari Italiani in Catalogna, a documentary found at Berlin's Bundesarchiv which records Francoist troops entering Igualada during the Spanish Civil War.

The exhibition can be visited at the Biblioteca Central d'Igualada until 26 September.
