Girona City Council will present Neighbourhood associations in Girona: between celebration and protest at 7.30pm on Wednesday 21 October at Centre Cívic Sant Narcís. The event is open to residents interested in the history of neighbourhood organisations and their role in securing local services, facilities and community activities.

The presentation is listed in the official 2026 Fires de Girona programme. It is a pre-festival event: the main Fires de Sant Narcís programme runs from Friday 23 October to Sunday 1 November, while its schedule also includes advance events from 17 to 22 October.

A record of neighbourhood organising in Girona

The council says the forthcoming volume examines the development of neighbourhood associations over the past century, with particular attention to the last 50 years. It covers their social, cultural and campaigning work.

Saida Palou Rubio coordinated the book, with contributions from Mateu Bruguera Soler, Carles García and Olga Taravilla. Its chapters address community life during the Franco dictatorship, organisations in Girona’s neighbourhoods, and the work of the Coordinadora d’Associacions Veïnals and the Federació d’Associacions de Veïns de Girona, bodies that bring together neighbourhood associations.

Drawing on documentary records and accounts from people involved in the movement, the book traces associations’ efforts to improve local services and facilities, as well as their organisation of popular festivals. Girona mayor Lluc Salellas has written the foreword.

Three public presentations are scheduled

  • Wednesday 21 October, 7.30pm: Centre Cívic Sant Narcís, Girona.
  • Tuesday 10 November, 7pm: Centre Cívic Ter, Girona.
  • Tuesday 1 December, 7pm: Centre Cívic Pont Major, Girona.

The book is due to be published around the Fires de Sant Narcís period. Residents can attend the first presentation at Centre Cívic Sant Narcís on Wednesday 21 October at 7.30pm; the municipal programme identifies it as a presentation event but does not set out purchase arrangements.
