Girona celebrated Sant Jordi Day on 23 April 2026, with hundreds of people filling the city's new stall locations, including Avinguda Sant Francesc, for the traditional celebration of books and roses.

The annual Sant Jordi celebration in Girona saw a significant change this year, with stalls relocated to Avinguda Sant Francesc. The City Council, in collaboration with booksellers and florists, reduced the number of stalls in Plaça Catalunya, citing safety concerns and ongoing platform consolidation works, according to the source.

Carme Ferrer, spokesperson for the booksellers, expressed satisfaction with the new space but hoped for a return to a fully utilised Plaça Catalunya in the future. Despite a rainy eve, Ferrer confirmed meteorologists predicted clear weather for the day, allowing hundreds to browse over 170 stalls across Plaça Catalunya, La Rambla, and the new Avinguda Sant Francesc.

Literary Tributes and Celebrations

The day began with the traditional literary breakfast organised by the Catalan government, which honoured 101-year-old poetess Isabel Oliva. For the first time, the City Council also organised an institutional act, paying tribute to writer Rosa Font Massot.

While the new layout facilitated this year's Sant Jordi celebrations, booksellers look forward to potentially expanding back into Plaça Catalunya in future editions, continuing Girona's cherished tradition of books and roses.
