Girona, Catalonia, saw around 100 people gather in Plaça del Vi on Saturday to protest against violence targeting the trans community, following the killing of a trans woman in Figueres on 19 May.
The demonstration was organised by several feminist and LGTBI+ groups. Protesters rejected the exclusion of trans women from femicide statistics and called for justice for the victim, according to local reports.
Manifestos read during the concentration denounced transphobia and urged legal changes to better protect trans people. Speakers also called on society to challenge prejudice and stereotypes that fuel hatred and violence.
The gathering was presented as a public response to the death in Figueres and to the wider problem of violence against trans people. Organisers said current legal definitions do not fully reflect the violence trans women face, leaving them undercounted in official figures.
