Changes of residence between municipalities in Girona’s counties totalled 22,905 in 2024, 13% more than in 2014, according to Idescat, Catalonia’s statistics institute. For residents considering a move within the region, the figures show that the Selva gained the most people through exchanges with neighbouring counties, while the Gironès recorded a net loss of 247.
Idescat records migratory movements when a person changes residence between municipalities. Of the 2024 total, 14,696 moves took place within the same county and 8,209 were between counties, representing 35.9% of all changes of residence.
Gironès to Selva was the largest inter-county flow
The largest flow between Girona counties was from the Gironès to the Selva: 1,322 people moved in that direction, compared with 987 moving from the Selva to the Gironès.
The Selva consequently recorded the strongest positive inter-county balance, gaining 422 residents. The Pla de l’Estany gained 56 and the Garrotxa gained 51.

Most moves remained within the same county
The Gironès registered 4,247 moves between municipalities within its own county, the highest figure in the Girona area. It was followed by the Alt Empordà, with 3,743, and the Baix Empordà, with 2,922.
- The Selva recorded 2,071 internal moves.
- The Garrotxa recorded 845.
- The Pla de l’Estany recorded 512.
- The Ripollès recorded 356.
Compared with 2014, internal moves rose most sharply in the Ripollès, up 35.4%. The Pla de l’Estany was the only county to register a fall, down 2.1%.
The Everyday Mobility Survey, led by the Generalitat’s Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition with the Girona Area Mobility Authority and Idescat, is collecting data on residents’ journeys, travel views and socioeconomic circumstances. Its 2024 fieldwork sample covers 14,000 people aged over four across the seven Girona counties, using telephone and online questionnaires.
