The Catalan government is working to secure the highest level of heritage protection for Antoni Gaudí's only known work in Tarragona. This involves the Santuari de Nostra Senyora del Sagrat Cor, which houses a collection of Gaudí's pieces, and the adjacent Cementiri dels Jans.

Both sites are now undergoing a detailed analysis. This process will determine if they meet the strict criteria for designation as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (BCIN), or 'Cultural Asset of National Interest'. This is the most elevated protection category under Catalan heritage law, according to the Diari de Tarragona.

Achieving BCIN status would provide significant safeguards for the Gaudí work and the surrounding area. It would ensure its preservation and recognition as a critical part of Catalonia's cultural legacy. The move highlights the government's commitment to protecting unique historical assets across the region.
