The Berguedà region in Central Catalonia recorded the first indigenous case of hantavirus in Catalonia, with the epidemiological surveillance service notifying its detection in September 2024.

Hantavirus is an infectious disease spread through the saliva, urine, and faeces of rodents, primarily field mice. Common symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle aches, and respiratory problems. In severe instances, the illness can be fatal, according to health officials.

This case in Berguedà marks the only recent precedent of the disease in Catalonia.

Preventing Hantavirus Transmission

Health authorities advise several preventative measures to avoid contagion. These include avoiding contact with rodents and their secretions, maintaining good personal hygiene, and ensuring enclosed spaces are well-ventilated. These steps are critical for public safety.

The discovery of this case has caused some public concern. However, health officials have assured residents that the situation is controlled. They also stated that all necessary measures are in place to prevent the virus from spreading further.
