Figueres was the focus of a peaceful rally on Monday, when around 100 people gathered to condemn the murder of a trans woman and call for an end to gender-based and transphobic violence.
The mobilisation, organised by several feminist and LGTBIQ+ groups from the region, began at 12pm and lasted for one hour. Attendees read a manifesto rejecting the killing and asking for stronger measures to protect LGTBIQ+ people.
The demonstration took place without incident. Those present also called for solidarity and unity in the face of hatred and discrimination, and repeated the message that trans women are women.
The crime, which has shocked Figueres, happened on Friday night when a woman was murdered in her home by her partner. The victim was 45 and was known in the city for her work in culture and her advocacy for LGTBIQ+ rights.
Organisers and participants said they hope the rally will encourage local authorities to review and strengthen policies aimed at protecting vulnerable communities.
