Figueres council has unanimously approved the steps to separate and accept four plots at the former Surera Bertran site in Poble Nou, totalling 10,162.75 square metres. The land, between Carrer Empordà and the streets of Aribau, Ramon Llull, Dalmau de Creixell and Pujada dels Pirineus, is intended for future public green space, facilities and road connections.
For Poble Nou residents, the decision opens the way for more than a hectare of land to become publicly owned, although the council has not set a construction date for the park or other works.
“It will involve significant investment when the time comes to create the green area, but we are pleased because the city is gaining another green lung,” said Jordi Masquef, the Mayor of Figueres.
Four plots earmarked for public use
The October plenary decision will formalise the free transfer of the plots from property company Immobiliària la Llar. The plots are to be registered as public-domain assets, free of charges or encumbrances.
- 7,488.82 square metres for public open space, with access from Carrer Empordà, between Carrer Aribau and Carrer Ramon Llull.
- 778.63 square metres for public facilities, beside the Centre Social de la Gent Gran and fronting Carrer Empordà.
- 1,291.45 square metres for a civic street system linked to the extension of Pujada dels Pirineus.
- 603.85 square metres for a road connection between the area and Carrer Empordà.
A separate 219.16-square-metre plot on Carrer Compositor Juncà will retain private residential use. The remaining parent site covers 8,011.86 square metres, including 2,103.56 square metres zoned for housing and 5,908.30 square metres for commercial and service uses.
Agreement linked to the city planning plan
The transfer follows an agreement between Figueres council and Immobiliària la Llar during work on the city’s new municipal urban development plan. The council’s urban-planning agreements register lists the Surera Bertran agreement as covering the resolution of objections submitted by the company during the plan’s initial approval process.
Masquef said the former factory site would become a residential area in future, with a type of detached housing that he said was lacking in Figueres. Residents can consult the council’s urban-planning agreements register for the published Surera Bertran agreement.
