Increased Rail Services for Diada
On Friday 11 September, public transport in Catalonia will see significant rail reinforcements to accommodate crowds attending Diada National Day events. The Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition has confirmed expanded train frequencies on Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) and Rodalies networks, while interurban bus services will maintain regular offerings with operators on standby for additional needs.
FGC Boosts Frequency and Capacity
FGC will add 348 extra runs on the Barcelona-Vallès lines, increasing total services from 770 to 1,118. Between 10:00 and 15:00, frequencies between Plaça Catalunya and both Sabadell and Terrassa will double from three to six trains per hour in each direction. From 15:00 to 21:00, this rises further to ten trains per hour each way.
On the Llobregat-Anoia line, services will follow a standard weekday Friday timetable, increasing from 244 to 420 runs, a rise of 176. Between 12:00 and 20:00, frequencies will double between Plaça Espanya and Manresa, and Plaça Espanya and Igualada, going from one to two trains per hour per direction. Service between Plaça Espanya and Martorell, via Castellbisbal, will increase from three to eight trains per hour per direction, while Plaça Espanya to Sant Boi will rise from six to 15 trains per hour per direction.
Additionally, trains on Barcelona-Manresa and Barcelona-Igualada routes will double their capacity, operating with six carriages instead of three.
The Plaça Catalunya FGC station, used by over 90,000 people daily, will be illuminated in the Catalan flag colours for the occasion, as has become tradition.
Rodalies Adds 25,000 Extra Seats
Rodalies will provide 25,000 additional seats compared to a regular day. The R2 line between Granollers and Castelldefels will see 19,000 extra seats with a train every 15 minutes. The R4 line will add 1,500 seats via two special trains between Terrassa Estació del Nord and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. The R1 will run two special services between Mataró and L'Hospitalet.
On the R11, two special services will operate between Figueres and Maçanet-Massanes, adding 1,500 seats. The R16 will also receive a 1,500-seat boost with two special trains connecting Sant Vicenç de Calders and Tortosa, as confirmed by the Department of Territory.
Diada Events in Barcelona
In Barcelona, official and civic events will mark the day. At 09:00, institutions, political parties and civic groups will lay a floral tribute at the Rafael Casanova monument on Ronda de Sant Pere, honouring the 1714 Siege of Barcelona.
In the afternoon, a decentralised independence demonstration under the slogan “This 11S I’m here. We are here. Independence” will begin at 17:14, a symbolic reference to the year 1714. Two columns, 'Present' and 'Future', will start from Gran Via with Casanova and Via Laietana respectively, converging at Plaça Catalunya for a political rally.
Following the rally, the 'Festa de la Llibertat' will take place at Plaça Lluís Companys from 19:00, featuring live music from La Gossa Sorda, DJ Trapella and DJ K-ZU.
Transport users are advised that mobility disruptions will affect Ciutat Vella and L’Eixample between 15:00 and 21:00, with progressive road closures along Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Via Laietana, La Rambla, and surrounding routes to accommodate the march.
