Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) has made its continued participation in Girona City Council’s governing coalition conditional on the new division of municipal responsibilities proposed by Mayor Lluc Salellas and on commitments to run the authority more efficiently.

The decision follows Junts’ departure from the municipal governing agreement. For Girona residents, the outcome will determine whether ERC remains in the city administration and how responsibilities are distributed for the rest of the term.

“Every decision taken within the municipal government must respond to the interests of the city and its residents above those of any party,” ERC said in a statement.

ERC says it will assess Salellas’s proposal internally

ERC said it would assess internally the proposal sent by Salellas, of Guanyem Girona, after Junts left the agreement. The party described the situation as one of “institutional uncertainty”.

The party said the new situation had also brought longstanding shortcomings to the fore and required pending discussions to be addressed. It called on Salellas and Guanyem to take steps towards a more efficient council operation through concrete measures lasting until the end of the electoral term.

Three ERC councillors say they are available

ERC said its three councillors, Quim Ayats, Àdam Bertran and Raquel Robert, would make themselves available for arrangements that help make Girona “more governable, more efficient and better able to resolve current shortcomings”.
