ERC sets conditions for continued support
Oriol Junqueras, president of the Catalan Republican Left (ERC), has urged the PSC-led Catalan government to adopt greater "national ambition" to secure the party's parliamentary backing on key issues. Speaking at a political gathering in Alella marking the start of the new political term, Junqueras stressed that ERC's support for critical measures, including the upcoming 2026 budget, hinges on policies being "useful for Catalonia" rather than relying solely on what he called "pure management".
With the narrative of management alone, it's not enough.
Junqueras emphasized that the central question is whether the PSC possesses the necessary ambition that "Catalonia needs and deserves." ERC, which holds crucial parliamentary support for the government, has made clear its expectation for stronger action on national matters.
Key policy areas under scrutiny
The party outlined its strategic priorities, including strengthening citizens' rights, reforming Catalonia's financing model, improving mobility, housing, education, and environmental policies. Junqueras criticized the current financial system as obsolete for 14 years and claimed that only ERC has taken concrete steps to address it. The party expects an imminent bilateral meeting on infrastructure and the approval of a new financial model or the settlement of accumulated financial debt within the coming weeks. Ester Capella, ERC's parliamentary spokesperson, added that the party will remain "demanding" in ensuring the government fulfils agreements made not just with political parties, but with Catalan citizens.
Broader political concerns raised
Junqueras also voiced criticism over the handling of the trial of Roger Español, condemning the lack of a competent Catalan-language interpreter as another breach of linguistic rights. He further denounced the Spanish Supreme Court's rejection of an amnesty for Carles Puigdemont, despite rulings from European courts, describing Spain as unique globally in its "anomalies and democratic deficits."
