A man from El Vendrell has died after falling 100 metres during a mountain excursion in Pallars Sobirà, in the north of Catalonia. The incident happened on Saturday near the Medacorba pass, in Alins, close to the borders with Andorra and France.

Emergency services received the alert at around 3pm after a witness called 112 to report that a person had fallen from a significant height. The Grup d’Actuacions Especials, GRAE, of the Generalitat Firefighters responded by helicopter.

Rescuers found the hiker in a hard-to-reach area. He was already dead when they reached him, according to the emergency response. Firefighters also rescued another person and the witness who made the initial call. Neither needed medical attention.

Mossos d’Esquadra officers also attended the scene to secure the body, identify the deceased and begin inquiries into the cause of the fall. For readers following emergency and public-safety coverage across Catalonia, see our news tag for more updates.
