Editorial Standards

Catalan.News is an AI-native news publication. This page sets out the standards we hold ourselves to.

Our principles

  1. Accuracy first. Every published claim is sourced from a named, verifiable origin — Generalitat or ajuntament press releases, public records, named publications, or direct primary documents. We do not publish speculation.
  2. Neutral tone. We report; we do not editorialise. Catalan politics is a sensitive topic and we cover it carefully, giving proportional weight to the major positions. Opinion content, when we publish it, is clearly labelled.
  3. British English. Spelling, grammar, and idiom default to British English. Catalan and Spanish names, places, and institutional titles are spelled per Catalan/Spanish convention. Metric units throughout.
  4. Attribution always. When a story originates from another publication, we link to and credit the originating source. We do not reproduce source text verbatim — every story is rewritten.
  5. Image credit. Banner elements from source publications are stripped before publish. The original photographer or publication is credited in the caption. AI-generated illustrations are labelled.
  6. No fabrication. We do not invent quotes, sources, or events. Where something is uncertain or unconfirmed, we say so.

How we use AI

Every story on this site is put together by a bespoke AI editorial system, Cybertron, which researches the material and writes the draft. A human editor then checks and signs off on each article prior to publication. The process runs as follows:

  1. Source ingestion. Feeds from named English-language and Catalan-language news sources are aggregated continuously across all eight vegueries.
  2. Regional classification. Stories are matched to the veguerai they affect using Catalan place-name keywords and source-domain heuristics.
  3. De-duplication. Wire-service reposts and previously covered stories are filtered out.
  4. Drafting. A large language model produces a draft from the available sources.
  5. Editorial review. The draft passes a quality gate — newsworthiness, sourcing, tone, accuracy of named entities, regional fit — before publication.
  6. Image processing. A separate stage handles banner stripping and source crediting.
  7. Publication. After a human editor signs it off, the piece goes out under the Catalan.News byline.

Every article is checked by a human editor before publication, including any item flagged by the gates.

This approach lets a small team cover an entire region at high cadence. It does not change our standards: every published article is held to the principles above, regardless of how it was drafted.

Bylines

Articles on this site carry one shared Catalan.News byline, and that byline is openly labelled as AI. It provides readers and anyone seeking a correction with a single, clear point of accountability, and it is not meant to suggest a human wrote the piece.

Conflicts of interest

The shop shop.retroshell.com is owned by RetroShell Ltd (UK), the same group as Pub.cat. Articles on Catalan.News do not promote RetroShell products. Any future partnership content will be clearly labelled "Sponsored". See Ownership & Funding.
