The CUP, a Catalan pro-independence left-wing party, is due to vote on Friday 25 September on a proposal for Laure Vega, one of its MPs in the Catalan Parliament, to stand as its candidate for mayor of Barcelona.
If the candidacy is approved, Barcelona voters will have another left-wing option in the next municipal election and the party will seek to regain representation on Barcelona City Council after failing to win seats in 2019 and 2023. The proposal must be ratified by the party's members, according to reporting published by Crónica Global on Thursday 17 September.
Ratification vote follows local proposal
Crónica Global reported that CUP local assemblies, organisations and allied groups, including Comunistes, backed Vega's proposed candidacy after considering polling.
The party had spent months debating whether to contest the municipal election again. It won three councillors in 2015 but has been absent from the council chamber during the past two terms.
Vega would have to leave the Catalan Parliament
Vega is currently an MP in the Parlament, Catalonia's legislature. The report said that, if the CUP wins seats in Barcelona, she would have to give up her parliamentary seat because the party does not allow one person to hold both elected posts.
Crónica Global also reported that Vega is scheduled to present her candidacy at an event on Saturday 17 October. Gerardo Pisarello is the candidate for the Comuns, the left-wing electoral group formerly led in Barcelona by Ada Colau.
