Tarragona’s Costa Daurada is becoming a stronger base for film and television production, with national and international projects drawn by its locations, costs and support services.

The area offers beaches, ports, historic centres, industrial zones, roads, natural spaces such as the Ebro Delta, vineyards and modern urban settings. That range lets crews recreate very different scenes within short distances, from Mediterranean city streets to futuristic backdrops, according to Diari de Tarragona.

Production costs are also often lower than in larger cities. Accommodation, support services, rentals and logistics can be cheaper, while the area’s transport links help crews move in and out more easily. Reus Airport and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport are both within reach, and the region is also served by high-speed rail and major roads.

Institutional support has played a part too. The Catalunya Film Commission and local film offices have helped simplify permits and administrative steps, while councils have become more aware of the economic and promotional value of filming. A successful shoot in the area can also encourage other productions to follow.

Recent projects linked to the Costa Daurada include the series Chacal on Skyshowtime, Amazon MGM Studios’ Blade Runner 2099, Disney’s live-action Tangled, Sam Mendes’ tetralogy about The Beatles, and the national production Cronos, which will revisit the attacks on Les Rambles and Cambrils on 17 and 18 August. The petrochemical complex, industrial estates, ports and railway infrastructure have also helped the area stand in for futuristic or international settings.

The region’s climate is another advantage, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and generally mild, stable weather. Over time, that has helped build a local network of professionals, technical firms, suppliers and specialist services, reducing the need to rely only on teams from Barcelona or Madrid.
