In Barcelona and across southern Catalonia, the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has restarted studies for quadrupling railway lines between Castelldefels and El Prat de Llobregat, with the scope now extended to Sants station in Barcelona.
The project is aimed at regional train services, with officials saying the wider study should help assess how to improve capacity and reliability on this busy corridor. The original tender was launched in 2024.
The work was suspended in January after a change in processing criteria, according to officials. Restarting the study means the ministry can now look again at the technical and environmental feasibility of the expanded route.
The next stage will examine track layouts, possible station changes and the likely impact on nearby communities. The findings will shape any later tendering and construction steps, if the project moves ahead.
