In Reus, the College of Architects of Catalonia (COAC) has opposed plans to demolish the former ICASS elderly care home, a Generalitat-owned building that has been closed since July 2024 because of structural problems.
The COAC says the site is one of the few examples of brutalist architecture in southern Catalonia. It argues that demolition would damage contemporary heritage because of the building’s architectural value and cultural legacy.
Brutalist architecture is known for raw concrete finishes and a strong, monumental form. Although the style has often been controversial, many such buildings are now being assessed for their historic and design value.
The Generalitat has not yet responded publicly to the COAC’s position. The future of the Reus site remains undecided, with a decision still to come on whether demolition will go ahead or other options will be considered for the structurally damaged building.
