Castellbell i el Vilar, in Bages, has introduced a new closed waste container system as part of its plan to improve selective collection and make waste management more efficient.
The change includes a reorganisation of some collection points in the municipality. Areas that previously only had general waste bins now have containers for all waste fractions, which the council says should make correct sorting easier for residents.
Under the new system, general waste and organic matter containers have an electronic locking mechanism and can only be opened on assigned days. Containers for packaging, paper and glass remain accessible at all times.
The council says the service will be monitored over the coming weeks to identify any problems and consider suggestions for improvement. Residents with questions can contact the Bages Waste Management Consortium on 605 332 840.
The aim is to increase recycling rates, reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and help the municipality meet current environmental requirements. The council thanked residents for their cooperation as the new system is introduced.
Across the Bages Consortium, which also includes municipalities from Moianès, 11 municipalities use door-to-door collection and 23 use closed containers. Both models are considered high-performance because they improve selective collection. Gaià and Sant Joan de Vilatorrada were the latest municipalities to adopt these systems, Moià is due to change on 1 July, and Sant Vicenç de Castellet will keep its current freely accessible containers until December 2027, when its service contract expires.
