C-12 Still Closed Following Barrancada
The C-12 regional road between Tortosa and Amposta remains closed to traffic after a flash flood from the barrancada de la Galera surged over the carriageway on Friday, 2 October 2026. The torrential flow cracked the asphalt, damaged safety barriers and signage, and caused significant harm to the recently inaugurated extension of the Via Verda de la Val de Zafán. Road workers are currently removing mud and debris, but no timeframe has been given for reopening the route. Drivers are advised to avoid the area entirely until further notice.
Truck Rescued, Workers Continue Clearing Debris
A truck was trapped at the point where the flash flood crossed the C-12, but it has since been removed. According to reports from Bombers de la Generalitat, two lorry drivers were rescued unharmed from vehicles caught in floodwaters on the C-12 when the barrancs de la Galera and de Baiot overflowed.
At the barrancs of la Galera and de Baiot at their final stretch, jumping the C-12 road, we rescued unharmed two drivers of two lorries trapped by water.
, Bombers (@bomberscat) October 2, 2026 Despite the removal of the vehicle, the structural damage to the road surface means the closure remains in place.
Greenway Infrastructure Severely Damaged
The recent extension of the Via Verda de la Val de Zafán, a sustainable cycling and walking path linking Tortosa with La Ràpita and connecting the Ports and Ebro Delta natural parks, suffered serious damage at the same location. The greenway runs parallel to the affected stretch of the C-12 and was heavily impacted by the force of the water. The project, funded largely through EU Next Generation funds with a budget of €6.3 million, was meant to boost eco-tourism across Terres de l’Ebre. The extent of repairs needed and any timeline for restoration have not yet been announced.

Residents Evacuated Amid Widespread Flooding
Emergency crews evacuated around 20 residents in Tortosa due to structural risks, while eight others were evacuated in Ulldecona as rising waters threatened homes and agricultural sites. Rescue teams carried out 19 interventions involving stranded vehicles across the Baix Ebre and Montsià regions during the peak of the flooding. More than 196 incidents were reported across the area due to inundations and mobility issues, according to Aguaita.cat. The incident underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure in flood-prone zones like the barranc de la Galera, which has a history of overflowing during heavy rains.
