Eleven people were injured, two seriously, after a butane cylinder exploded in a building on Venero Street, 13, in Barcelona's Poblenou neighbourhood. The incident occurred on 12 May 2026.

Barcelona City Council confirmed that one person is in a serious condition and another is less seriously injured. Both were taken to Vall d'Hebron Hospital. The remaining nine individuals sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital transport. The Catalan Emergency Medical System (SEM) deployed nine ambulances to the scene.

Emergency Response and Evacuation

The explosion sparked a fire, with ten fire brigade units working to extinguish the flames. The 112 emergency telephone service received thirty calls regarding the incident, prompting the activation of the PROCICAT civil protection plan. The affected building, which has a ground floor and a first floor, was evacuated.

According to social media reports from emergency services, the area includes a residence and a day centre. While only the building directly involved in the fire was initially evacuated, streets such as Pujades and Llull were closed to traffic as emergency crews responded.

Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the investigation into the cause of the explosion progresses.
