Seven British tourists, comprising a teacher and six underage pupils, were hospitalised in Calafell, Tarragona, this week following a suspected food poisoning incident during their holiday on the Costa Daurada. All individuals have since been discharged and have returned to the United Kingdom.
The incident came to light in the early hours of Monday, 4 May, when one of the minors began feeling unwell while sleeping at their hotel in Calafell. Soon after, the rest of the group started showing similar symptoms, including headaches, general discomfort, and stomach pains. The teacher then informed the hotel staff about the situation.
Investigation Underway
The Public Health Agency of Catalonia (Aspcat), part of the Generalitat, has launched an investigation to determine the source of the intoxication. Health technicians spoke with the teacher to reconstruct the group's movements from their arrival on 2 May until their departure on 5 May.
During their stay, the tourists visited various locations across the Costa Daurada, including beaches, towns, and the PortAventura World theme park. As of now, the Department of Health has not been able to pinpoint the origin of the foodborne illness.
The seven affected individuals received preventative care at a hospital and were discharged once doctors confirmed their favourable recovery.
