Anthology Revives Voice of Tortosa Intellectual

The Biblioteca Marcel·lí Domingo in Tortosa hosted the presentation of Bon dia, cultura catalana on Wednesday, a collection of all 75 weekly columns written by Manuel Pérez Bonfill for the regional weekly Ebre Informes between 1977 and 1985. Published by Onada Edicions to mark the centenary of his birth, the book highlights Pérez Bonfill’s unwavering defence of the Catalan language, working-class rights and self-determination. Edited by Emigdi Subirats, the volume also underscores Pérez Bonfill’s deep engagement with theatre and literature, as well as his support for fellow cultural figures from the Terres de l’Ebre such as Zoraida Burgos, Joan Cid and Frederic Mauri. The writings offer insight into a period of social and political transition, reflecting his sharp, critical perspective.

Tribute Highlights Cultural Impact

The event opened with remarks from Irene Prades, director of the library, and Mar Lleixà, mayor of Tortosa. Subirats then spoke about Pérez Bonfill’s role in shaping local cultural and civic life. A standout moment was a dramatised fictional conversation performed by Subirats and Xavier Colom, set against the backdrop of the Ebro River and its iron structures, symbolising the industrial and cultural identity of the region. Attendees shared personal reflections on how Pérez Bonfill’s teaching and writing had influenced them, creating an emotional closing to the gathering. The tribute forms part of the ongoing Any Manuel Pérez Bonfill, a year-long series of events commemorating the centenary of his birth.

Final Events Include Theatre Premiere

The commemorative year will conclude with the premiere of a theatrical production by students from Institut Dertosa, further extending Pérez Bonfill’s legacy through education and performance. More information about upcoming events is available via the Biblioteca Marcel·lí Domingo's official page.
