Barcelona City Council now manages 5.2 kilometres of its coastline, from Barceloneta to the Fòrum area, after an agreement with the Spanish state. The transfer gives the city direct control over a key stretch of the Barcelona waterfront.

The deal means the council will be responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of these coastal areas. That includes beaches, promenades and other public spaces used by residents and visitors.

The change also marks a shift in how the coastline is governed. Until now, the Spanish state held jurisdiction over this stretch, but the new arrangement places local management in the hands of the city.

Barcelona can now set its own policies and programmes for coastal development and environmental protection within this area. For more local coverage, see our news page.
