Barcelona recorded one of its warmest nights in May on 28 May, with overnight temperatures coming close to historical records. The heat came as an exceptional spell affected Catalonia and much of central and western Europe.

The warm air mass arrived just ten days after the city had daytime maximum temperatures below the current night-time lows. Across Barcelona, the night from Wednesday to Thursday was unusually warm for the time of year, with some readings only a few tenths of a degree from record levels.

At the Fabra Observatory, the minimum temperature reached 23.4 C on 28 May, just 0.4 C below its all-time May record. The highest minimum temperature for May at the observatory remains 23.8 C, set on 26 May 1922.

The heat was not limited to the higher parts of the city. In Les Corts, the Can Bruixa station recorded a minimum of 22.5 C on Thursday, only 0.1 C below its historical record of 22.6 C, set on 29 May 2001.

Officials said it would be necessary to wait until midnight to confirm whether the readings would place second in the historical rankings. Local weather observations also indicated no sign of a drop in temperatures in the following hours.
